Knockgriffin adds new broodmare division
2/2/2009
In late 2007, Jim FitzGerald purchased a gorgeous tract of 420 virgin acres just eight minutes from his Knockgriffin Farm and has developed the property into his primary broodmare division. It opened for the 2009 breeding season. Named Harpur’s Island in honor of his father’s home in Ireland, this new farm has three state-of-the-art barns complete with 20 rubber-matted stalls and well-designed paddocks just yards away from each facility. The farm also boasts large, sweeping fields with beautiful mature trees for its broodmare bands, and the entire farm’s water supply is naturally spring-fed, a proven ingredient for a horse’s well-being. And like Knockgriffin, Harpur’s Island has a specially designed, fully enclosed stall that could provide heat or air conditioning for injured or ailing horses. This feature reduces the chance of a sickly horse having to travel into a veterinary clinic for treatment. There are three new staff houses and a manager’s home built on the new property, providing 24-hour care for the bloodstock. The 2 ½ miles of freshly paved roads feature breath-taking views from every hillcrest, and some beautiful old stone fences line the horizon. This simply is one of the most beautiful farms in Kentucky and a rare find of such coveted soil.
