Knockgriffin is situated perfectly between Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum’s yearling division of Darley, Raceland Farm, and Dr. Phil McCarthy’s Watercress Farm. It is also within a mile of Denali Stud and Crystal Springs Farm.
Knockgriffin offers more than 80 stalls on its main premises, and another 30 stalls, and two barns, one of which is a foaling barn, on its other division, Harpur’s Island. One of the existing 27-stall block barns is equipped with a heated/air conditioned stall for special monitoring, and each barn has its own wash rack. The farm also boasts a beautifully converted wood barn that has 16 stalls and a covered round pen.
Yearlings
The yearling facilities are impeccable, complete with a six-horse, free-style, covered Stratton exercise walker, a show ring with tent that emulates Keeneland Sale’s environment, and individual paddocks as well as large, open grazing fields.
Broodmares / Foals
Mares and young foals have their own individual paddocks, then graduate to gently rolling larger fields once it is determined the foal is ready to be turned out with other mares and foals. They are brought in daily to be groomed and fed, and this extra handling by top grooms is noticeable when it is time to begin sales preparation or breaking/training.
Maiden / Barren Mares
Maiden and barren mares have an advantage at Knockgriffin of staying in a paddock yet still under full lighting prior to breeding season. There are two completely-lit, small paddocks with run-in sheds, which allow the mares to be out of the elements, yet outside for a healthier environment.
Broodmare Division
In late 2007, Jim FitzGerald purchased a gorgeous tract of 420 virgin acres just eight minutes from his Knockgriffin Farm and has developed the property into his primary broodmare division. It opened for the 2009 breeding season. Named Harpur’s Island in honor of his father’s home in Ireland, this new farm has three state-of-the-art barns complete with 20 rubber-matted stalls and well-designed paddocks just yards away from each facility.
The farm also boasts large, sweeping fields with beautiful mature trees for its broodmare bands, and the entire farm’s water supply is naturally spring-fed, a proven ingredient for a horse’s well-being. And like Knockgriffin, Harpur’s Island has a specially designed, fully enclosed stall that could provide heat or air conditioning for injured or ailing horses. This feature reduces the chance of a sickly horse having to travel into a veterinary clinic for treatment. There are three new staff houses and a manager’s home built on the new property, providing 24-hour care for the bloodstock. The 2 ½ miles of freshly paved roads feature breath-taking views from every hillcrest, and some beautiful old stone fences line the horizon. This simply is one of the most beautiful farms in Kentucky and a rare find of such coveted soil.
