Sky Kingdom on Track for Serious 3YO Campaign
12/18/2011
Jim FitzGerald's young mare SKY BEAM has gotten off to a terrific start as a broodmare, as her first foal, SKY KINGDOM, broke his maiden impressively at Hollywood Park in late November. The Bob Baffert-trained Empire Maker colt then finished a determined fourth in the Grade 1 CashCall Futurity in mid-December, beaten less than 2 1/2 lengths. Sky Kingdom is primed to make headlines as he begins his 3-year-old campaign for owner Westrock Stables, who purchased him as a weanling for $180,000. Sky Beam is out of a stakes-placed full sister to the incomparable A.P. Indy. She is currently in foal to Candy Ride (Arg) after also producing a Corinthian colt and a Tiznow filly.

The top yearling filly for Tuesday’s session was the Smart Strike lass out of Tash Dash (Hip 463). Her $300,000 bid from B.W.J. Bloodstock held well enough to be the co-third highest price for all yearlings in the seven-day sale. Thursday’s segment had only two yearlings bring six figures, with the Knockgriffin-based colt Tapit—Ryvnine (Hip 1171) leading the way with a $145,000 bid from Stepping Stone Bloodstock. The penultimate session on Saturday featured a Knockgriffin Farm youngster by Saint Liam out of Golf Girl (Hip 2118). Renowned bloodstock agent Mike Ryan went to $220,000 to secure the colt, easily the top price for the day. Ryan also had signed the ticket for the colt’s ill-fated sire and was quite satisfied to land this one from Saint Liam’s only crop. “He was a very tal... More >
